This is not a new thought, but it truly blows my mind how normalized/desirable abusive, controlling, cruel & inappropriate behavior is presented in mainstream narratives of romance. Love is not proved by competition. You don’t win someone’s heart by “beating” someone else to the punch. Love is complicated. It’s messy. It’s imperfect. When I was a little girl, my mother had a conversation with me about the power of lies. “A lie always begets a lie,” She warned. “It’s better to tell the truth, no matter how ugly, and suffer the consequences then and there. Or better yet, don’t do things you feel you need to lie about.” And another nice thing she always said: “lie has short legs.” I love it!
