On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, we remember the powerful legacy of the Mirabal sisters, whose tragic fate gave birth to this significant date. “Se me matam, levantarei os braços do túmulo e serei mais forte.” With these words, Minerva Mirabal, an activist from the Dominican Republic, responded to those who warned her that the regime of President Rafael Leónidas Trujillo (1930-1961) would kill her in the early 1960s.
Minerva’s defiance and bravery, along with her sisters Patria and María Teresa, symbolize the unwavering spirit of resistance against tyranny and oppression. The Mirabal sisters, known as “Las Mariposas” (The Butterflies), stood up against the brutal dictatorship, advocating for freedom and justice in a time of darkness. Their courage cost them their lives, but their martyrdom ignited a flame of hope and resilience that continues to burn brightly.
The assassination of the Mirabal sisters on November 25, 1960, shocked the world and galvanized the fight against gender-based violence. Their deaths were a stark reminder of the horrific realities faced by women under oppressive regimes, but also a testament to the indomitable strength that women possess. In their memory, we unite to combat all forms of violence against women, honoring their sacrifice by continuing their struggle for a better, more equitable world.
Minerva’s prophetic words echo through time, a rallying cry for justice and empowerment. Even in death, she envisioned a strength that would rise from the grave, stronger and more resolute than ever. This strength is embodied in every woman who fights for her rights, who refuses to be silenced, who stands up against violence and oppression.
On this day, we remember the Mirabal sisters not just as victims, but as symbols of hope and courage. We commit ourselves to a world where violence against women is eradicated, where every woman can live with dignity and respect. Let us honor their memory by carrying forward their legacy, lifting our voices and our actions in unison, to create a world where justice prevails, and the spirit of “Las Mariposas” lives on.
