Be careful with how much you tolerate

It is a quiet, almost domestic horror—this slow erosion of the self. We think we are being generous. We think we are practicing the art of patience, that holy, misguided virtue, while all the while we are crafting a manual.

The syntax of your existence is being rewritten by the very people you hope to love. You offer a boundary, soft as breath, and they step over it. You do not shout. You do not retreat. You simply adjust, and in that adjustment, you signal compliance. You are teaching them how to treat you. It is a lesson delivered not in words, but in the shivering silence of your own surrender.

Do you see the trap? It is exquisite and terrible. You give, and you give, and you tolerate the small indignity, the slight disregard, the way they forget the sound of your name when it is spoken in a whisper. And because you endure it, they learn that your name is a sound they are permitted to ignore. You have written the syllabus for your own diminishment.

The tragedy is not that they are cruel—though they may be. The tragedy is the accuracy of your instruction. You are the architect of this cold house, laying one stone of “allowable behavior” at a time, until the walls are so high that you can no longer see the sun. You are complicit in your own erasure.

Wake up. The realization is a sharp, jagged piece of glass in the palm of your hand. It hurts, but it is real. To tolerate is to participate. If you wish to be treated with the gravity of a soul that deserves to be seen, you must stop translating your worth into a language they find convenient to disregard.

You must break the pattern. You must become, for them, a mystery they cannot solve with a gesture of indifference. You must teach a new lesson, one written in the firm, unyielding ink of a “no” that vibrates in the air like a bell. Stop teaching them that you are made of nothing. Start teaching them that you are made of everything.
